Game Cancellations
Lightning, Heat, & Air Quality Policy
Games may be cancelled before game day, the day of, just before the game starts, or anytime during the game. Games cancelled at one location may not mean other locations are cancelled. A 6:15 game cancellation may not mean the 7:30 game is. Typically, if the field is NOT cancelled by the city the decision will be made on the field.
Quite often, stormy and rainy mornings and afternoons do not affect a field's playability. A heavy rain at 2pm may still result in a dry field at 7:30pm. This is partly why we ask teams and referees to make the decision shortly before the game starts. Cancelled games are not rescheduled.
Any player, spectator, coach, etc. who plays, practices, or stays on a cancelled field may be reported to the league and may be disciplined. Using the fields may risk losing permits. More importantly, safety is what matters most. DO NOT risk being on the field if told to leave due to dangerous weather.
Who Decides if Games Are Cancelled?
-
City of Regina
-
2pm the day of a game or 7:30am on weekends. Please check City of Regina | Athletic Fields & Ball Diamonds
-
IF the city cancels the game NO ONE is allowed to use the field for games or practice. Using the field could make us lose the permit
-
-
RWZCSA or Interzone board members/executives
-
Other zone executive (12-18U) at the field to assist teams and can make the decision
-
We will post on Facebook and email affected teams. Coaches may be called
-
Typically in cases where we can assess the field before the game, but may happen at game time
-
-
Referees (for ALL games with referees)
-
At any point before or during the match
-
Coaches should work with referees on deciding if the game should be cancelled. Ex. Coach assigns someone to watch for lightning during the game
-
Referee has final decision at the field unless the city or executive cancels.
-
Referees are instructed to stay for any games they cancel and to inform all players. Referees will also report anyone using the fields when not permitted to
-
-
Coaches (3-6U)
-
Coaches should work with parents on deciding if a game should be cancelled for 3-6U.
-
8-18U teams should follow the instructions of the city, board, and referees
-
If coaches cancel the game, please let us know
-
Why Are Games Cancelled?
Games may be cancelled due to:
- Unsafe or bad field conditions (Flooded fields, damage due to cars, etc.)
- Dangerous weather (lightning, tornadoes, hail)
- Low air quality that becomes dangerous to players
- Extreme heat
- Lack of players (if teams are consistantly low players, please let us know. We should avoid cancelling due to this).
